5 Kitchen Extension Ideas to Make the Most of a Small Space

13 August 2026

Plenty of West London gardens are wonderfully compact, and that's absolutely fine - some of our favourite kitchen extensions have come from smaller spaces, built cleverly. Here are five ideas we love.

1. A roof lantern over the dining area. Even a modest extension feels wonderfully open with a well-placed lantern pulling daylight down into the middle of the room.

2. Bi-fold or sliding doors onto the garden. Blurring the line between kitchen and garden makes a small extension feel like it flows straight outside.

3. A single, generous island instead of lots of separate units. One lovely, well-placed island often works better than cramming in extra cupboards.

4. Light, reflective surfaces. Pale worktops, gloss splashbacks and mirrored elements all help a compact space feel bigger and brighter.

5. Built-in seating. A bench with hidden storage tucked neatly under a window makes lovely use of every inch, freeing up the room beautifully.

Whatever the size of your space, we love finding the layout that makes the most of it - it's honestly one of our favourite parts of the job.

Frequently asked questions

How small can a kitchen extension be and still feel worth it?

Even a modest 3-4 square metre extension can transform a kitchen when the layout and light are thought through carefully - it's about much more than square footage.

Can you help me choose materials and finishes?

Absolutely - we love talking through material and finish choices with you, and sharing what's worked beautifully in other West London kitchens.
